Maruti Suzuki ships out 500 units of Ritz superhatch to Indonesia
"Indonesia is a prime destination for Ritz. On Wednesday, the first lot of 500 units of Ritz, sporting 1.2 litre petrol engine, is being dispatched to Indonesia," a senior company official was quoted as saying to PTI, adding that "A-star and Ritz represent important steps by an Indian company to emerge as a car manufacturer with global appeal. It is in line with parent Suzuki Motor Corp's vision of turning India into a global hub for compact cars."
In a separate media report, Maruti Suzuki had also revealed that it is looking to enhance its export base by entering into markets in the Middle East, South America, West Asia and Australia. "We are currently exporting our cars to the European countries but now we will start exploring new markets such as Africa, South America, the Middle East and Australia to boost our exports," a senior official told reporters in Chandigarh recently.
Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki has said that is aiming to clock 1,000,000 units in sales during the current financial year on the back of resurgence in the domestic car market and stable demand in the overseas markets. However, the company has maintained that it sees
the next year challenging on rising raw material prices and a possible roll back of government stimulus package. It is to be mentioned that Maruti, Maruti, in which Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp has 54.2 per cent stake, has already sold nearly 731,000 vehicles in the first three quarters of this year.
The company's chairman R.C. Bhargava was quoted as saying to Reuters exclusively,"All these are concerns and it is not possible to make a firm accurate forecast of what will happen in the next 15 months," he told Reuters in an interview, referring to the outlook for the coming year. He added, "Sales in 2009-10 are expected to jump 26 per cent from 792,166 units in the previous year, with exports set to double to 145,000 units. Bhargava said exports were likely to be maintained in 2010-11, with sales to new markets such as Africa, Australia and New Zealand. An end to a scheme to scrap older cars in Europe this year is expected to have a significant impact on the sales of Maruti's A-Star hatchback, which is exported to several countries there including Germany, Britain and France.

Skoda unveils new engine 1.2 TSI for Octavia
With its performance and maximum torque of 175 Nm at 1,550 – 4,100 revs/min-1, this extremely responsive new engine is an ideal solution for both city and motorway driving. Optionally, the unit can be combined with a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed automatic DSG.
Pursuing the downsizing trend, i.e., lower volume & excellent power, this modern engine makes it possible to combine economical operation and environmental friendliness with impressive driveability. With a combined consumption of 5.7 l/100 km, the Octavia 1.2 TSI complies with the EU5 and is now the most economical petrol model of the Octavia line. Furthermore, its low emission record (134g CO2/km) helps significantly in reducing Skoda's average emissions profile. The vehicle will be available from February 2010.
"We are really proud of our smallest engine in terms of volume, because it provides an ideal combination of state-of-the-art technology, economical operation and environmentally-friendly driving. It is an advanced unit that offers excellent driveability under every circumstances," said Dr. Eckhard Scholz, Skoda Auto BOD member responsible for technical development.
The new engine continues Skoda's tradition of over 110 years of excellence in engine manufacturing. The Mlada Boleslav plant started producing this unit in 2009. Planning to reach 1,000 units/day this year, the facility employs 600 people in engine manufacturing and produces as many as 2,800 engines in total every day. Besides the 1.2 TSI, the plant produces two versions of the 1.2 HTP (two different power levels) and performs the finish assembly of the 1.4 MPI and the diesel units 1.4 TDI PD, 2.0 TDI PD, 2.0 TDI CR.

Chevrolet Aveo RS debuts at 2010 Washington Auto Show
"We hope the Aveo RS show car will demonstrate that we are as serious about redefining the Aveo and its place in the small-car segment as we were about reinventing the Malibu," said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet general manager.
The Aveo RS show car, finished in electric Boracay Blue, wears global Chevrolet design cues such as the dual element grille, round taillamps and fender flares, but designers turned up the attitude on the show car with low openings and a lower mouth trimmed in a combination of brushed and polished aluminum. Outboard fog lamps are integrated into an exaggerated brake-cooling inlet that flows into the front fender flares, creating an aggressive-looking face.
Exposed headlamps, with their brushed aluminum structural surround, are inspired by the designers' affection for motorcycles. The sleek side profile is characterized by uninterrupted body side lines, a high beltline and low roofline. The side mirrors with amber-colored turn signal indicators carry the same shape as the car and seemingly disappear into the profile. At first glance, the car actually looks like a three-door hatch because the rear door handles are discreetly located in the "C"-pillar area.
"The Aveo RS show car demonstrates how progressive design can inject personality into a small car," said Michael Simcoe, executive director, North American Exterior Design. "We want customers to see it and have an emotional reaction to it."
The Aveo RS show car's wheels are 19-inch, five-spoke with a gun metal metallic finish Chevrolet logo. The wheel openings reveal large Boracay Blue brake calipers. The rear of the show car continues the sport theme, with an integrated spoiler that flows from the roof, a center-mounted exhaust and chrome exhaust tips. The exposed motorcycle-inspired rear taillamps feature tinted aluminum housings and a discreet Bowtie logo. With its matte black interior highlighted by gloss black, metallic and blue accents, the Aveo RS show car reflects as much attention to detail as the exterior. The Boracay Blue theme continues inside, with accent stitching across the dual cockpit instrument panel, front and rear door insert, steering wheel rim, gear shift boot, parking brake, leather seat bolster and even the floor mats. The integrated center stack holds the gearshift, HVAC controls and the sound system, including a USB port. Ice-blue backlighting on the audio display, telltale indicator screen and knobs augments the blue stitching.
The motorcycle inspiration also carries inside, with a round, analog tachometer set within an asymmetrical LCD readout also trimmed in milled metal with round cutouts; and round, aluminum-trimmed side vents. The interior is as functional as it is stylish, with storage compartments in the center stack and doors. The rear seats fold flat for carrying larger items.
The Aveo RS show car is powered by the same highly efficient 138-horsepower (103 kW) 1.4L I-4 Ecotec turbocharged engine that will be available in the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze. A six-speed manual transmission is designed to ensure the car will provide a spirited driving experience.
For the show car, designers created a special engine cover in graphite silver with a brushed aluminum insert. The coolant and power steering fluid fill caps are rimmed in ice blue, and the honeycomb vents flanking the center of the cover are matte-finished in shadow chrome and designed to match the wheel color.
Chevrolet has previously announced the new Aveo will be built at Orion Assembly in Orion Township, Mich., in 2011, a move that will restore 1,200 jobs to Southeast Michigan. Timing for retooling Orion Assembly for Aveo production is anticipated to begin in late 2010. The Aveo is an important member of Chevrolet's family of small cars, positioned between the upcoming Cruze compact sedan and the Spark five-door mini car in size.

Harely Davidson India to try local assembly to bring down costs
In its bid to find a solution, the American bike major is weighing options to assemble its bikes in India, as reported by Live Mint exclusively. However, the business daily claims that the proposal is still under consideration and it is hard to say what decision the firm will take, citing some unconfirmed sources. The first batch of motorcycles would however be brought in from its parent company’s plant and dispatched at its various dealers in the country to dealers starting April, would be imported as completely built up (CBU).
“With the present duty structure, more companies would look at assembling their cars and motorcycles in India. For Harley-Davidson this would achieve a twin objective. They’d be able to keep their US plants active and reduce prices for Indian consumers,” said Dilip Chenoy, director general of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.
It is widely believed that Harley would be looking to enhance its foothold in emerging markets like India, after witnessing a massive drop in its volumes in developed markets like Europe, US, etc.
Recently at the Auto Expo, Harley-Davidson India announced it will bring 12 motorcycles from its 2010 model portfolio to India. The broad selection, with bikes from each of its five model families, will give riders in India maximum choice and opportunity to join millions of Harley-Davidson owners worldwide in pursuit of adventure, freedom and self-expression. The 12 models Harley-Davidson launched for the Indian market earlier this month would retail for Rs. 6,95,000-34,95,000 as the firm would have to pay around 80% in import duties and other levies. “For over a century, Harley-Davidson has inspired motorcyclists across the world to celebrate their passion for riding. Our experience in leading the leisure motorcycle market worldwide makes us naturally suited to help lead and define leisure riding in India. We entered India with a promise to bring riders the pure Harley-Davidson experience with bikes from every family. Over the past year we have listened to riders across India at our many events, and we have produced a line-up to stir their soul,” said Anoop Prakash, managing director, Harley-Davidson India.
Mercedes-Benz India inaugurates its dealership in Surat
Recently, Dr. Aulbur had also dismissed reports that the company was losing out its numero uno status to BMW. Terming the competitor's lead a product cycle issue, he said: "We had only limited completely knocked down kits of the E-Class, which sold faster than we thought. We sold 686 kits and the demand was around 1,000 and we sold 1,600 cars of the C-Class," he said. Mercedes-Benz is intent on reclaiming the number one spot in the Indian luxury car market with sales in excess of 4,000 units this year.
TOI has reported that Mercedes Benz is internally targeting 40-50 per cent growth during this year against last year when sales had bottomed out due to the economic slowdown in the first quarter and non-availability of its E-Class vehicle in the next quarter.

Jaguar GT racing car makes European debut
GT racing legend Paul Gentilozzi is taking a break from a gruelling development programme to feature the XKR in the largest dedicated trade motorsport exhibition in Europe. The racecar will be on display at the Jaguar stand alongside a production model XKR, XFR, and the fastest Jaguar ever – the Bonneville XFR prototype, which Paul drove to 225.675 mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats in 2008.
Jaguar asked the Michigan-based RSR team to help create a race car to compete in GT2 racing in 2010. The Jaguar engineering and design teams, based in Coventry, have jointly developed the car from a standard road-going XKR with the RSR team.
Paul Gentilozzi, principal Partner Jaguar RSR said: "Jaguar is so intertwined with British motoring history making this a fantastic opportunity to debut the Jaguar RSR XKR GT racecar internationally. Having our new GT racecar and the Bonneville prototype XFR on display at the biggest motorsport exhibition in Europe with the production cars that made these possible is such a great way to showcase our dedication to the Jaguar brand and to motorsports."
After taking centre stage at the car show, the Jaguar RSR XKR GT will visit "home" by making stops at Jaguar headquarter sites in Whitley and Castle Bromwich in the UK. "It will be incredibly exciting to take the Jaguar RSR XKR GT back to the team at Jaguar who worked so hard to make this dream a reality," added Gentilozzi. "A picture may be worth a thousand words, but seeing this car in person is priceless."
The competition car uses the standard Jaguar XKR lightweight aluminum monocoque together with additional steel reinforcements and safety structure developed by RSR. The 5.0-litre V-8 engine boasts 550 horsepower at 7000 rpm and a maximum speed of 180mph.
The Jaguar RSR XKR GT made its racing debut during the Petit Le Mans event at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia, in September 2009. The car took its first green flag in the American Le Mans Series season finale at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in October and is set for a full-season championship effort in 2010.
Mike O'Driscoll, managing director of Jaguar Cars said: "Our designers and engineers have taken the best of our standard road-going XKR and with Paul Gentilozzi's motorsport expertise created a first-class competition car. Paul and his RSR team are confident that they can compete against some serious competition in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS).
"Motorsport has always been important to the Jaguar brand. Our domination of Le Mans in the 1950s was a foundation on which the company was developed. As we look to the future with our new range of high performance 'R' branded cars, we aim to make the Jaguar brand synonymous with motorsports once again."
In 1951, the C-type won Le Mans at its first attempt, with a further victory in 1953. The D-type took Le Mans wins in 1955, 1956 and 1957 while this racing success was followed in 1988 with the Jaguar XJR-9LM, a V12-powered Group C car. Another outright victory would follow in 1990 with the Jaguar XJR-12.
RSR principle partner Paul Gentilozzi will be in attendance at Autosport International. Aside from his role as team owner, Paul is one of the drivers for the #33 JaguarRSR XKR. Meanwhile, the RSR crew will stay busy with various projects despite the absence of the #33 car as they continue to prepare for the ALMS Winter Test February 22 – 23 at Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida and Season Opener – the 12 Hours of Sebring, March 20.
