North-East centre of NATRiP Dholchora inaugurated by Industry Minister

The Dholchora Campus of the National Institute for Automotive Inspection, Maintenance And Training was inaugurated by the Hon. Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh. In attendance was an impressive political entourage consisting of local luminaries like Shri Dinesh Prasad Goala, Hon. Minister for Urban Development Housing, Government of Assam, Shri Kabindra Purkayastha, Hon. MP from Silchar, Dr. Rumi Nath, MLA from Borkhola and of course our very own former Minister of Heavy Industries, Shri Sontosh Mohan Dev and a plethora of other dignitaries, including Shri Rajesh Singh, CEO and Project Director, NATRIP.

Inaugurating the Dholchora campus, Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh, Hon. Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises stated that this was a very important centre to come up in this region and not only a pride for the North-Eastern parts but the entire country. He emphasized that such a centre would encourage OEMs to set up factories here and accompanying ancillary units like components would surely fuel economic growth in this region. Hon. Minister stated that with modern driving aids like the Driving simulator present here, people could practice driving virtually without endangering other road users and become proficient drivers within a short period of time. He vowed to carry on the good work done by his predecessor, Shri Sontosh Mohan Dev and promised full support to all running projects.

Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh, Hon. Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises especially mentioned that this centre would help upgrade the driving skills in this region and make the on road vehicles better maintained with fast upcoming facility of automated Inspection and Maintenance, the first of its kind in this region. He said that the mechanics training institute would also help in better maintenance of vehicles thereby improving the overall road safety profile in the north east.

Hon. Minister for HI and PE also inaugurated the driving simulator, the first in this region and one of handful in the country.

While the Indian Automobile Industry is growing at an impressive rate, there is a growing concern regarding the increase in number of accidents taking place on Indian roads. India accounts for about 10% of road accident fatalities world-wide equivalent to hundred and twenty thousand lives. Also, as per a survey, India looses around Rs.55,000 Crores annually due to the road traffic accidents.

This necessitates important action to be taken by the automobile researchers and engineers for promoting vehicle safety. Road Safety in the developing countries is assuming a serious dimension with fatal and serious accidents on the rise. Other areas of concern are the constant rise in number of traffic violations, and unabated congestion resulting in road rage, crime, and pollution.

At the Dholchora campus in Silchar, a hill driver Training centre equipped with training tracks, and a driving simulator is already functional. This, coupled with knowledgeable and efficient trainers will help train commercial vehicle drivers to drive safely in hilly terrain and all weather conditions. This is especially important, considering the fact commercial drivers spend most of their working life on roads, which leave a lot to be desired in terms of safety, signage etc.

The biggest bane of most truck drivers is undoubtedly overloading and sometimes rash driving. However, it has been seen that with proper instruction and education, most truck drivers refrain from such counterproductive practices. Also, concepts of scientific traffic management, usage of vehicle controls and systems i.e. turn signal indicators, importance of maintenance and basic driving skills like hill holding with load, are in a position to be taught today. Currently, experts are imparting lessons both on the simulator, as well as in a mix of theory classes and practical demonstration training.

Jaffirbond, which is racing towards its finish line, is almost ready to start what has been envisioned as the most important factor which could make our roads safer today: Inspection and maintenance (I and M). Today, there are more vehicles on the road than ever before, and this has compounded the problems of maintenance and upkeep of all vehicles, especially commercial ones. Studies show that sometimes even basic maintenance is lacking like tyre tread depth, usage of lights, especially blinkers and rear combination lamps etc. are woefully inadequate. Add to this overloading and bad driving practices and a sure recipe for disaster raises its ugly head. The Jaffirbond campus aims to impart quality education on I and M to students who will be the future of the vehicle industry of India and thereby create a whole new generation of youngsters who will be the demand of the automobile industry of tomorrow. Further, the Jaffirbond campus unique I and M initiative is likely to be involved in the national Inspection and Certification (I and C) regime, which is being initiated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) in North-Eastern areas.

The Dholchora and Jaffirbond campuses are a unique collaboration between the Government, the public and industry. With the first batch of instructional sessions already underway, this centre is poised to play a leading role in the entire northeastern area, given the fact that the North-East is primarily a hilly region and has some of the most beautiful (and dangerous) roads in the entire country.

National Automotive Testing and R and D Infrastructure Project (NATRiP), the largest and one of the most significant initiatives in the automotive sector so far, represents a unique joining of hands between the Government of India, a number of State Governments and Indian Automotive Industry to create a state of the art Testing, Validation and R and D infrastructure in the country. The Project aims at creating core global competencies in the automotive sector in India and facilitates seamless integration of Indian Automotive industry with the world as also to position the country prominently on the global automotive map. The facilities under NATRiP at Manesar, Chennai, VRDE Ahmednagar , ARAI Pune, Rae Bareilly, Silchar and Indore will not only provide comprehensive homologation and product testing and validation facilities for vehicles and components but will also foster global competencies for generic research and development geared to catapult India into the league of nations with automotive excellence. NATRiP centers will house several Centre of Excellence for advanced research in emerging areas of technologies.

Maruti Suzuki ships out 500 units of Ritz superhatch to Indonesia

In its bid to enhance its foothold in the South East Asia markets, Maruti Suzuki India Limited is now looking to export its models to countries like Indonesia. Of late, PTI has reported that the country's second largest car export had already made first shipment of 500 units of Ritz to the Indonesian market. Ritz is available in two variants-1.2 litre petrol and a 1.3 litre diesel engine. The move to target South East Asian markets with Ritz comes just after its A-Star premium compact car crosses one lakh units mark for exports in December, within 11 months of starting overseas shipments. It was reported earlier that the A-Star is exported to 44 countries, predominantly in Europe, along with Philippines, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

"Indonesia is a prime destination for Ritz. On Wednesday, the first lot of 500 units of Ritz, sporting 1.2 litre petrol engine, is being dispatched to Indonesia," a senior company official was quoted as saying to PTI, adding that "A-star and Ritz represent important steps by an Indian company to emerge as a car manufacturer with global appeal. It is in line with parent Suzuki Motor Corp's vision of turning India into a global hub for compact cars."

In a separate media report, Maruti Suzuki had also revealed that it is looking to enhance its export base by entering into markets in the Middle East, South America, West Asia and Australia. "We are currently exporting our cars to the European countries but now we will start exploring new markets such as Africa, South America, the Middle East and Australia to boost our exports," a senior official told reporters in Chandigarh recently.

Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki has said that is aiming to clock 1,000,000 units in sales during the current financial year on the back of resurgence in the domestic car market and stable demand in the overseas markets. However, the company has maintained that it sees
the next year challenging on rising raw material prices and a possible roll back of government stimulus package. It is to be mentioned that Maruti, Maruti, in which Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp has 54.2 per cent stake, has already sold nearly 731,000 vehicles in the first three quarters of this year.

The company's chairman R.C. Bhargava was quoted as saying to Reuters exclusively,"All these are concerns and it is not possible to make a firm accurate forecast of what will happen in the next 15 months," he told Reuters in an interview, referring to the outlook for the coming year.  He added, "Sales in 2009-10 are expected to jump 26 per cent from 792,166 units in the previous year, with exports set to double to 145,000 units. Bhargava said exports were likely to be maintained in 2010-11, with sales to new markets such as Africa, Australia and New Zealand. An end to a scheme to scrap older cars in Europe this year is expected to have a significant impact on the sales of Maruti's A-Star hatchback, which is exported to several countries there including Germany, Britain and France.

The Audi R8 Spyder finished top of the category "Convertibles" this year at the first time of asking. Rupert Stadler, chairman of the Board of Management of Audi AG, took receipt of the award in the "Alte Reithalle" in Stuttgart. In the "Off-road vehicles" category, the Audi Q5 left its competitors trailing. The award was accepted by Michael Dick, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development at Audi AG.

These impressive results were rounded out by the three second-place finishes. Readers of ams voted the Audi A3 into second place in the 'Lower midsize class' category, a feat emulated by the Audi A6 in the 'Upper midsize class' and the Audi R8 Coupé in the 'Sports car' categories.

Hyundai Motor net profits up by 104.5 percent helped by India and China operations

Hyundai Motor Company has announced that its net profit increased by 104.5 per cent to 29.615 trillion Won from a year earlier helped by brisk sales in China and India which on a unit sales basis posted y-o-y gains of 93.6 per cent and 14.4 per cent, respectively. South Korea's largest automaker, saw 2009 sales rise 11.7 per cent y-o-y to 3,106,178 units (domestic plants: 1,611,991 units, overseas 1,494,187 units) a year earlier.

Despite the 23 per cent y-o-y sales improvement in its home market in Korea to 701,469 units and the Korean won's appreciation against the US dollar (15 per cent gain) and the Euro (10.1 per cent gain), Hyundai saw 2009 sales revenues slip by 1.0 per cent y-o-y to 31.859 trillion won on reduced export shipments from its Korean plants.

Aided by favourable exchange rates and the company's widely implemented cost-cutting efforts, operating profit also rose by 19.1 per cent to 22.350 trillion won despite higher marketing, dealer and brand development expenses which are necessary to secure future competitiveness.

Domestic sales recovered by 23.0 per cent y-o-y thanks to the successful launch of new models, Equus, Tucson ix and Sonata and tax benefits extended between May and December to new car buyers trading in vehicles 10 years or older.  However, export sales from the three Korean plants fell 17.1 per cent to 910,522 units due to reduced demand in Russia while production of the i30 compact hatchback picked up pace at the newly opened manufacturing plant in Czech.

By region, Hyundai saw a rise in market share in developed countries such as the United States and the EU despite strong headwinds in those regions last year.  In China, Hyundai registered an impressive 94 per cent growth in sales by selling 570,300 units and become the 4th largest company in the country.

Skoda unveils new engine 1.2 TSI for Octavia

Skoda Octavia is going to get a new engine - the existing line of petrol units will be extended with the turbocharged four-cylinder 1.2 TSI/77 kW with direct injection that has been used in the Yeti.

With its performance and maximum torque of 175 Nm at 1,550 – 4,100 revs/min-1, this extremely responsive new engine is an ideal solution for both city and motorway driving. Optionally, the unit can be combined with a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed automatic DSG.

Pursuing the downsizing trend, i.e., lower volume & excellent power, this modern engine makes it possible to combine economical operation and environmental friendliness with impressive driveability. With a combined consumption of 5.7 l/100 km, the Octavia 1.2 TSI complies with the EU5 and is now the most economical petrol model of the Octavia line. Furthermore, its low emission record (134g CO2/km) helps significantly in reducing Skoda's average emissions profile. The vehicle will be available from February 2010.

"We are really proud of our smallest engine in terms of volume, because it provides an ideal combination of state-of-the-art technology, economical operation and environmentally-friendly driving. It is an advanced unit that offers excellent driveability under every circumstances," said Dr. Eckhard Scholz, Skoda Auto BOD member responsible for technical development.

The new engine continues Skoda's tradition of over 110 years of excellence in engine manufacturing. The Mlada Boleslav plant started producing this unit in 2009. Planning to reach 1,000 units/day this year, the facility employs 600 people in engine manufacturing and produces as many as 2,800 engines in total every day. Besides the 1.2 TSI, the plant produces two versions of the 1.2 HTP (two different power levels) and performs the finish assembly of the 1.4 MPI and the diesel units 1.4 TDI PD, 2.0 TDI PD, 2.0 TDI CR.

Chevrolet Aveo RS debuts at 2010 Washington Auto Show

General Motors'the new Chevrolet Aveo RS makes its Washington, D.C. debut this week at the 2010 Washington Auto Show. It features a European-inspired hot hatch look designed to appeal to young enthusiasts, and hints at the next-generation Aveo. Longer, wider and more spacious than the current production Aveo, the Aveo RS showcases the car's upscale-looking design cues both inside and out, and presents the many personalization options potentially available on the next-generation car. Its 1.4L I-4 Ecotec turbo engine delivers exceptional fuel economy with performance when it's needed.

"We hope the Aveo RS show car will demonstrate that we are as serious about redefining the Aveo and its place in the small-car segment as we were about reinventing the Malibu," said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet general manager.

The Aveo RS show car, finished in electric Boracay Blue, wears global Chevrolet design cues such as the dual element grille, round taillamps and fender flares, but designers turned up the attitude on the show car with low openings and a lower mouth trimmed in a combination of brushed and polished aluminum. Outboard fog lamps are integrated into an exaggerated brake-cooling inlet that flows into the front fender flares, creating an aggressive-looking face.

Exposed headlamps, with their brushed aluminum structural surround, are inspired by the designers' affection for motorcycles. The sleek side profile is characterized by uninterrupted body side lines, a high beltline and low roofline. The side mirrors with amber-colored turn signal indicators carry the same shape as the car and seemingly disappear into the profile. At first glance, the car actually looks like a three-door hatch because the rear door handles are discreetly located in the "C"-pillar area.

"The Aveo RS show car demonstrates how progressive design can inject personality into a small car," said Michael Simcoe, executive director, North American Exterior Design. "We want customers to see it and have an emotional reaction to it."

The Aveo RS show car's wheels are 19-inch, five-spoke with a gun metal metallic finish Chevrolet logo. The wheel openings reveal large Boracay Blue brake calipers. The rear of the show car continues the sport theme, with an integrated spoiler that flows from the roof, a center-mounted exhaust and chrome exhaust tips. The exposed motorcycle-inspired rear taillamps feature tinted aluminum housings and a discreet Bowtie logo. With its matte black interior highlighted by gloss black, metallic and blue accents, the Aveo RS show car reflects as much attention to detail as the exterior. The Boracay Blue theme continues inside, with accent stitching across the dual cockpit instrument panel, front and rear door insert, steering wheel rim, gear shift boot, parking brake, leather seat bolster and even the floor mats. The integrated center stack holds the gearshift, HVAC controls and the sound system, including a USB port. Ice-blue backlighting on the audio display, telltale indicator screen and knobs augments the blue stitching.

The motorcycle inspiration also carries inside, with a round, analog tachometer set within an asymmetrical LCD readout also trimmed in milled metal with round cutouts; and round, aluminum-trimmed side vents. The interior is as functional as it is stylish, with storage compartments in the center stack and doors. The rear seats fold flat for carrying larger items.
The Aveo RS show car is powered by the same highly efficient 138-horsepower (103 kW) 1.4L I-4 Ecotec turbocharged engine that will be available in the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze. A six-speed manual transmission is designed to ensure the car will provide a spirited driving experience.

For the show car, designers created a special engine cover in graphite silver with a brushed aluminum insert. The coolant and power steering fluid fill caps are rimmed in ice blue, and the honeycomb vents flanking the center of the cover are matte-finished in shadow chrome and designed to match the wheel color.

Chevrolet has previously announced the new Aveo will be built at Orion Assembly in Orion Township, Mich., in 2011, a move that will restore 1,200 jobs to Southeast Michigan. Timing for retooling Orion Assembly for Aveo production is anticipated to begin in late 2010.   The Aveo is an important member of Chevrolet's family of small cars, positioned between the upcoming Cruze compact sedan and the Spark five-door mini car in size.

Harely Davidson India to try local assembly to bring down costs

Even as American heavyweight bikemaker, Harley Davidson, is on course to burn its rubber on Indian roads, it is at the same time looking at ways to bring down its costs simply because imported bikes attract 60 per cent import duty and with 30 per cent local taxes additionally makes the MRP of the product prohibitively expensive.

In its bid to find a solution, the American bike major is weighing options to assemble its bikes in India, as reported by Live Mint exclusively. However, the business daily claims that the proposal is still under consideration and it is hard to say what decision the firm will take, citing some unconfirmed sources. The first batch of motorcycles would however be brought in from its parent company’s plant and dispatched at its various dealers in the country to dealers starting April, would be imported as completely built up (CBU).

“With the present duty structure, more companies would look at assembling their cars and motorcycles in India. For Harley-Davidson this would achieve a twin objective. They’d be able to keep their US plants active and reduce prices for Indian consumers,” said Dilip Chenoy, director general of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.
It is widely believed that Harley would be looking to enhance its foothold in emerging markets like India, after witnessing a massive drop in its volumes in developed markets like Europe, US, etc.

Recently at the Auto Expo, Harley-Davidson India announced it will bring 12 motorcycles from its 2010 model portfolio to India. The broad selection, with bikes from each of its five model families, will give riders in India maximum choice and opportunity to join millions of Harley-Davidson owners worldwide in pursuit of adventure, freedom and self-expression. The 12 models Harley-Davidson launched for the Indian market earlier this month would retail for Rs. 6,95,000-34,95,000 as the firm would have to pay around 80% in import duties and other levies. “For over a century, Harley-Davidson has inspired motorcyclists across the world to celebrate their passion for riding. Our experience in leading the leisure motorcycle market worldwide makes us naturally suited to help lead and define leisure riding in India. We entered India with a promise to bring riders the pure Harley-Davidson experience with bikes from every family. Over the past year we have listened to riders across India at our many events, and we have produced a line-up to stir their soul,” said Anoop Prakash, managing director, Harley-Davidson India.

The company has an extensive network with presence across 26 cities represented by more than 45 touch points across India with which is the largest as compared to any luxury player in India.

Recently, Dr. Aulbur had also dismissed reports that the company was losing out its numero uno status to BMW. Terming the competitor's lead a product cycle issue, he said: "We had only limited completely knocked down kits of the E-Class, which sold faster than we thought. We sold 686 kits and the demand was around 1,000 and we sold 1,600 cars of the C-Class," he said. Mercedes-Benz is intent on reclaiming the number one spot in the Indian luxury car market with sales in excess of 4,000 units this year.

TOI has reported that Mercedes Benz is internally targeting 40-50 per cent growth during this year against last year when sales had bottomed out due to the economic slowdown in the first quarter and non-availability of its E-Class vehicle in the next quarter.

New livery unveiled for Mercedes GP Petronas F1 team at Stuttgart

On 25th January, 2009, the new Silver Arrows Formula One works team, Mercedes GP Petronas was presented at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. Nico Rosberg and seven-time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher along with team management Ross Brawn, Nick Fry and Norbert Haug were introduced to guests with a presentation and press conference.

The new silver and green livery which has been especially created depicts a true marriage between the heritage of the Silver Arrows and the team's title partner Petronas. The legacy of the Silver Arrows goes back to the 1934 Eifel Race when, on the evening before the event, the white paint was sanded off the Mercedes W25 race car to fulfil weight regulations (750kg formula) and the silver colour of the aluminium surface of the car appeared. This season, with the return of the Silver Arrows, the MGP W01 will shine in silver combined with a flow of iridescent silver and green shading. On the nose and other parts of the car, traces of black carbon fibre visible are visible – a reminder of the first Silver Arrow of 1934.

The event opened with a welcome speech by Dr. Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars before Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg unveiled the new Silver Arrows livery for the 2010 season on last year's car. The team's 2010 car, the MGP W01, will make its track debut at the first Formula One test in Valencia on Monday 1 February; with the 2010 Formula One season starting in Bahrain on 14 March.

Commenting on the occasion, Michael Schumacher said, "Finally the 2010 Formula One season is firing up! I have to say that I am totally committed to this new challenge. This season feels like a re-start for me and I am so motivated. We have a very exciting combination at Mercedes GP Petronas. We have a World Champion team in every sense of the word and I cannot wait to get into the car for the first time in Valencia. I am convinced that  the new team will be in a very good position to fight for the championships this season and I will definitely give it a go. Driving for Mercedes-Benz again is like the closing of a circle for me as I started my racing driver career with the three-pointed star on my helmet. This is another reason why I cannot wait for the competition to get underway."

Nico Roseberg said, "You can really feel the successful motorsport history of Mercedes-Benz here at the Museum in Stuttgart and to be part of the new Silver Arrows team and that racing heritage makes me feel extremely proud and motivated. Since joining the team in November, I have spent a lot of time at the factory in Brackley, at Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines in Brixworth and here in Stuttgart, which has given me the opportunity to settle in and get to know everyone. I have seen how hard the team is working on the new car and I really can't wait for the opportunity to drive it for the first time in Valencia next week. I am looking forward to working with everyone at the new team and will give it my all to reward their fantastic efforts with good on-track results this season."

Ross Brawn, team principal, said, "It is a privilege to be here at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart today for the official presentation of the new Formula One Team. With your first look around the Museum, you realise the fantastic racing heritage of Mercedes-Benz and we hope to be able to contribute to those successes going forward. Our team have been working extremely hard throughout last year and over the winter on the development of the MGP W01 and everyone at the team is looking forward to the start of testing in Valencia next week. We have two excellent drivers in Nico and Michael, who will form one of the most exciting and one of the best partnerships on the grid, and with the support of Mercedes-Benz, Aabar, our new title partner PETRONAS and all of our team partners, everyone is looking forward to the 2010 Formula One season with anticipation."

Norbert Haug, VP, Mercedes-Benz Motorsport said, "With today's presentation of our new Formula One Team, a new and certainly the most important chapter of over 100 years of Mercedes-Benz motorsport history begins. The new Formula One season will offer challenges which will be bigger than ever before in over sixty years of the sport's history. We look forward to the cooperation with our drivers Nico Rosberg who has enormous capabilities and perspectives, and with seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher who is no less motivated than at the time when he began his professional motor racing career with Mercedes-Benz and then made his first step into such a successful Formula One career with our support. Today I also cordially welcome our new title partner Petronas as well as our co-investor Aabar/IPIC together with all of our team partners. I warmly welcome all our colleagues from last year's World Championship team Brawn GP headed by Ross Brawn and Nick Fry to the Mercedes family. There are challenging tasks ahead of us and we will tackle them with power, consistency and full motivation."

In the domestic market, its Alto ruled the sales charts with 2.4 lakh units, followed by the WagonR with sales of 1.4 lakh units during reporting period. Maruti Suzuki, which has more than 60 per cent share of the compact car market - the largest segment in India -, is seeing huge demand for some specific models.

It was reported pretty recently that Maruti Suzuki has decided to expand capacity at its Manesar plant to 250,000 units per annum by 2012, for which it plans to invest Rs 1,700 crore. The country's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, announced on Saturday that it would invest Rs 1,700 crore in a second line at its Manesar factory.  The company's second line at Manesar is expected to take the total capacity of the Manesar plant to 5.5 lakh units a year. The company's other plant at Gurgaon has an installed capacity of seven lakh units a year.

Speaking to a business daily, R. C. Bhargava, chairman of Maruti Suzuki, said the new line would mainly focus on compact cars, for which the demand is exceedingly high. Jaguar GT racing car makes European debut

The new Jaguar RSR racing car makes its European debut this week at the 2010 Autosport International at the NEC in Birmingham, UK. It is the first and only chance for the public to see the stunning new XKR GT in the metal before it heads back to the US to compete in the entire 2010 American Le Mans Series (ALMS) in North America.

GT racing legend Paul Gentilozzi is taking a break from a gruelling development programme to feature the XKR in the largest dedicated trade motorsport exhibition in Europe. The racecar will be on display at the Jaguar stand alongside a production model XKR, XFR, and the fastest Jaguar ever – the Bonneville XFR prototype, which Paul drove to 225.675 mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats in 2008.

Jaguar asked the Michigan-based RSR team to help create a race car to compete in GT2 racing in 2010. The Jaguar engineering and design teams, based in Coventry, have jointly developed the car from a standard road-going XKR with the RSR team.

Paul Gentilozzi, principal Partner Jaguar RSR said: "Jaguar is so intertwined with British motoring history making this a fantastic opportunity to debut the Jaguar RSR XKR GT racecar internationally. Having our new GT racecar and the Bonneville prototype XFR on display at the biggest motorsport exhibition in Europe with the production cars that made these possible is such a great way to showcase our dedication to the Jaguar brand and to motorsports."

After taking centre stage at the car show, the Jaguar RSR XKR GT will visit "home" by making stops at Jaguar headquarter sites in Whitley and Castle Bromwich in the UK. "It will be incredibly exciting to take the Jaguar RSR XKR GT back to the team at Jaguar who worked so hard to make this dream a reality," added Gentilozzi. "A picture may be worth a thousand words, but seeing this car in person is priceless."

The competition car uses the standard Jaguar XKR lightweight aluminum monocoque together with additional steel reinforcements and safety structure developed by RSR. The 5.0-litre V-8 engine boasts 550 horsepower at 7000 rpm and a maximum speed of 180mph.

The Jaguar RSR XKR GT made its racing debut during the Petit Le Mans event at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia, in September 2009. The car took its first green flag in the American Le Mans Series season finale at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in October and is set for a full-season championship effort in 2010.

Mike O'Driscoll, managing director of Jaguar Cars said: "Our designers and engineers have taken the best of our standard road-going XKR and with Paul Gentilozzi's motorsport expertise created a first-class competition car. Paul and his RSR team are confident that they can compete against some serious competition in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS).

"Motorsport has always been important to the Jaguar brand. Our domination of Le Mans in the 1950s was a foundation on which the company was developed. As we look to the future with our new range of high performance 'R' branded cars, we aim to make the Jaguar brand synonymous with motorsports once again."

In 1951, the C-type won Le Mans at its first attempt, with a further victory in 1953. The D-type took Le Mans wins in 1955, 1956 and 1957 while this racing success was followed in 1988 with the Jaguar XJR-9LM, a V12-powered Group C car. Another outright victory would follow in 1990 with the Jaguar XJR-12.

RSR principle partner Paul Gentilozzi will be in attendance at Autosport International. Aside from his role as team owner, Paul is one of the drivers for the #33 JaguarRSR XKR. Meanwhile, the RSR crew will stay busy with various projects despite the absence of the #33 car as they continue to prepare for the ALMS Winter Test February 22 – 23 at Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida and Season Opener – the 12 Hours of Sebring, March 20.
