Volkswagen deliveries increase by 1.3 percent in April 2009

The Volkswagen Group has done noticeably better than the other global automotive majors.In an overall market down by approximately 20 per cent, the group delivered 541,600 vehicles (April 2008: 568,100) “With our Group’s attractive model range we have largely been able to buck the trend and are on target with these figures,” Detlef Wittig, executive vice-president, Group Sales and Marketing, commented in Wolfsburg on Monday. With conditions remaining difficult, the Volkswagen brand even sold more vehicles in April. Compared with the same month in 2008, the core brand delivered 339,500 passenger cars (335,100), a rise of 1.3 per cent.

MRF declares lockout at Arkonam tyre plant,India

Leading tyre manufacturer, on 18th may, 2009, has announced that its management has declared lock out at the company’s manufacturing plant situated at Arkonam in Tamil Nadu with effect from 3.00 p.m. on May 17, 2009, on account of labour unrest in the factory. It may be recalled that around 3,000 employees of MRF in Arkonam and Puducherry were on a 'sit-in' strike within the premises of the respective facilities since May 9, 2009, protesting the dismissal of around 150 workers. Though it could not be officially confirmed but media but the workers went on strike as they were disappointed with the management as the company denied recognition to them and 150 labourers were also dismissed by the management so far. The Arkonam plant produces 10,500 radial tyres a day, while MRF's Puducherry unit makes 26,000 units of tyre and 42,000 tubes a day.

Maruti Made-in-India compact car by 2012, to also develop 10 hybrids by 2010

On the sidelines of launching its Ritz Model at Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh, on 18th May, 2009, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has confirmed that it is designing a car from scratch in India that may hit the domestic market by 2011-12. It has been learnt that the car would be completely conceptualised, designed and developed car within three years.
MSIL has confirmed that the company will be using the technical expertise and know-how of Indian engineers for that car. The company has been hiring aggressively in disciplines such as design, electrical and mechanical engineering as it is gearing up to develop a model that would be designed from scratch in India. The company, which will rely significantly on local talent for the project, plans to hire 1,000 engineers by 2010, and has already begun the process.

Amtek Auto and Sumitomo sign JV to roll out forged crankshafts

The Delhi-based automotive components manufacturer, Amtek Auto, on 18th May, 2009, has entered into a 50:50 joint venture agreement with Japanese company, Sumitomo Metals, a part of the Sumitomo Corporation, thereby increasing the Indian autoparts maker's product portfolio.
